Salzburg Photos: Collegiate Church (Kollegienkirche)
return to "summer
photos 2"
The Collegiate Church or Kollegienkirche is a late-Baroque church at the city
centre of Salzburg. The Altstadt (Old Town) is mostly shaped by early Baroque
churches, which is one of Salzburg's most important assets. There are a few
exceptions to it and the Kollegienkirche
is the most important of them: Built by
Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, a super-star of Baroque architecture in all
of the Habsburg Empire and beyond (Salzburg was in fact "beyond" back in those
days), the Collegiate Church became the official church of
Salzburg University. It was one of four churches that Fischer von Erlach designed for the Prince
Archbishop (or local monasteries) that you can still see today. The other three
are the Trinity Church (Dreifaltigkeitskirche), the
Krankenhauskirche St.
Johannes and the Kirche St. Markus.
