Christian-Doppler-Klinik:
Clinic for Neural Diseases in Salzburg

The Christian-Doppler-Klinik is a hospital that belongs to the state of Salzburg. It is dedicated to neural and mental diseases and can be found in the district of Liefering in the city. It was founded in 1898 as "Salzburger Heilanstalt für Gemüts- und Nervenkranke"; back then one of the most modern hospitals for mentally ill people outside of Vienna.

However, the oldest facilities to care for mentally ill and crazy people in Salzburg goes back to 1778. The re-naming occurred only recently, when Salzburg discovered the significance of its son Christian Doppler, the physicist.

The Christian-Doppler-Klinik was built on the land of mainly two farms, the Gierlinggut and the Langwallnergut, as well as other properties. The area was traditionally part of Maxglan (back than an independent municipality), only recently it was made a part of Liefering.

Today, the Christian-Doppler-Klinik is a modern hospital with several divisions. Neurology, neuro-surgery, geriatrics, psychiatry and psychotherapy, clinical psychology, pathology and neuro-anaesthesiology. The facility had been modernised and extended several times since it was founded; however, the core of the architecture is still the 1898 pavilion outlay.
