Window at St. Peter Abbey, Salzburg

The monastery of St. Peter was founded in 696 by St. Rupert - although it is likely that there was already a communtiy of monks active in this part of Salzburg before the arrival of Rupert. St. Peter is a Benedictine monastery (the oval fresco over the window in this picture depicts St. Benedict) and the oldest Catholic monastery outside of Italy. St. Peter was famous for its scriptorium and for making illuminations. The monastery′s library was refurbished in 1999 and houses some 100,000 volumes. Since St. Peter is a very active monastery, only parts of it are open to the public.
