Salzburg Photos: Stift Nonnberg in Winter
return to "winter
photos 2"

We have encountered the convent of Stift Nonnberg
in this photo gallery a few
pictures before. Here you can see how close it is to the
Festung Hohensalzburg,
the fortress or castle. Note also the tower on the left side, it is a typical
Medieval defence tower of which you will find many all over the
Old Town: They
were incorporated into the city walls and came with strong gates. Stift Nonnberg
itself is less heavily fortified. The nunnery is supposedly the oldest nunnery
north of the Alps that existed with no interruption, continuously since the 9th
century. It became internationally famous when it featured in the musical "The
Sound of Music". The convent itself is not open to the public, but visitors can
enter the cemetery and the church.
