Salzburg Photos: A Guild Sign for a Pub in Salzburg

Ever since the Middle Ages, Guild Signs guaranteed that even people who were unable to read or write would understand what kind of business they would find in a certain house. In a way, guild signs are the ancestors of modern advertising posters. Salzburg is famous for its many guild signs - a high concentration of them can be found in the Medieval shopping lane of Getreidegasse, around Mozart′s birthplace. Even Salzburg′s oldest brothel (one of currently 16) has one. This guild sign promotes the bar ′Zum fidelen Affen′, a traditional beer tavern between in Berggasse, close to Linzergasse and Dreifaltigkeitsgasse.
