Salzburg Photos: Old TOwn (Altstadt) in Winter

The silhouette of the Old Town (Altstadt) with Hohensalzburg Fortress as the dominant feature. The picture was taken in January; note how little water there is in the River Salzach - half the river bed is dry, as water is "bound" in snow and ice in the Alps, where the Salzach originates from. Only in late spring or even early summer, the water level rises considerably. This picture was taken in 2010 and will possibly be one of the last of this kind: There is currently a hydropower plant being built downstream from Mülln (where this picture was taken) which will result in the Salzach section within the city turning into a reservoir. Once this project will be completed, the days of half-empty river beds will be over.
