Salzburg Photos: Neustadt of the City
return to "winter
photos 2"
A classic vista on the so-called Neustadt of Salzburg. The term means "new city"
and was used in the late 19th century to reflect the
Altstadt ("Old Town") that
dates back to the Medieval and Baroque eras. The Neustadt comprises of mainly
Historicist buildings along the Salzach River and in parallel to the
Linzergasse
Lane, the so-called Andräviertel. It was built following two big events: A
devastating fire in the early 19th century and the demolition of the bastions
and city walls in the area of today's Andräkirche in the late 19th century. The
Neustadt looks a bit like a mini-version of Vienna and doesn't really fit in
with the rest of central Salzburg. Nevertheless, property in the area is very
expensive due to the pompous nature of the architecture and the great location.
This picture was taken fromm a look-out platform on the
Mönchsberg, somewhere
between the Museum der Moderne (Museum of Modern Art) and the Müllnertor
depicted in the previous picture.
