Salzburg Photos: Skating at the Ice Rink

An ice rink is built at the heart of Salzburg's city centre every year

Every year in winter, the Mozartplatz Square in Salzburg's Altstadt is transformed into a winter wonderland with market stands selling punch and mulled wine and a massive ice rink. It must be one of the most charming ice rinks in all of Europe - allowing to skate in the middle of Baroque churches and palaces at the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the weeks before Christmas, the attractions of the Mozartplatz are rivalled by the nearby Christmas Market, but they last longer: Whilst the "Christkindlmarkt" closes on the 24th, the market stands next to the Ice Rink on the Mozartplatz stay there for much of the winter.
