Salzburg Photos: The Glockenspiel in the Neue Residenz Palace
return to "summer
photos"

There are not many Glockenspiel arrangements in the World. They were developed in the Netherlands in the 17th century and a luxury thing to have - thus, not many rulers could afford to have any. Salzburg was an exceptionally wealthy place at this time, and so Prince Archbishop Wolf-Dietrich von Raitenau ordered a Glockenspiel directly from the Netherlands. Unfortunately, no Salzburg clockmaker know how to set it up once it had arrived in Salzburg - therefore, they failed to get it work properly. As a result, the Salzburg Glockenspiel is famous for running slightly out of tune.
Best heard on the Residenzplatz or
Mozartplatz.
