Lady in Dirndl dress entering a church in Salzburg

A woman in the traditional Austrian costume or Dirndl dress - and sneakers - enters a church for service in Salzburg. The city is the centre for traditional costume or 'Tracht' in Austria, including its own styles of lederhosen, dirndl dress and acessoires. Tracht became popular in the 1920ies - until then, it had been the festive dress for peasants. Today, it is considered to be formal wear in Austria and especially for the Salzburg festival, once can see many people wearing Tracht for attending opera or concerts.
